Privacy Policy
Effective date: 31 October 2026
This policy explains what information the iTag app for Android handles, why it is used, and what choices you have. iTag is part of InfoLife and is operated by Pii Mobile Limited ("we" or "us"). We are responsible for how your information is handled as described in this policy.
Quick summary
- The app lets you edit the tags (such as title, artist, album, and cover) of music files stored on your phone, fix tags saved in old text encodings, and search for album covers online. Your music files, tags, and music library stay on your phone and are never uploaded, sold, or shared.
- Only when you tap Find online for a song or use Find missing covers, the app sends the album title and artist name to MusicBrainz and downloads cover images from the Cover Art Archive. We do not receive or store these searches.
- You do not need an account, there are no in-app purchases, and we never ask for your name or email address in the app.
- The app is free and shows ads. Our advertising partners and service providers collect some information about your phone and how you use the app, as explained below.
- Where the law requires it—such as in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland, and some US states—the app asks for your ad privacy choice before ads load and only shows personalised ads (ads matched to your interests) if you give your permission. You can change your choice at any time in the app.
What stays only on your phone?
With your permission to access music on your phone, iTag lists your songs and albums and reads their tags and covers. This happens only on your phone.
When you save changes, the app writes them into the music file on your phone. On Android 11 and later, Android first asks you to allow iTag to modify the file or files. The app edits a temporary copy in its private storage, checks it, writes it back to the original file, and deletes the temporary copy.
When you choose a cover image from your phone, Android's picker gives the app only the image you picked. Your settings (such as your preferred old text encoding) are also stored on your phone.
Your music files, their tags, and your music library are never uploaded, sold, or shared.
What leaves your phone when you search for covers online?
Only when you tap Find online for a song, or use Find missing covers, the app sends the album title and artist name to the MusicBrainz music database, run by the MetaBrainz Foundation, to find matching albums. It then downloads cover images from the Cover Art Archive, a joint project of MetaBrainz and the Internet Archive (images are hosted by the Internet Archive).
As with any internet request, these services receive your phone's IP address (your internet address) and technical request details, including the app name, app version, and our support email address (which identify the app, not you). These connections are encrypted using HTTPS. The services process this information under their own privacy policies: MetaBrainz Privacy Policy and Internet Archive Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
We (Pii Mobile Limited) do not receive or store these searches.
What information is collected and why?
The app is free and shows ads: a native ad on the result page after Fix garbled tags or Find missing covers, and full-screen ads at natural breaks (after a batch run, or after saving several songs). No ads are shown while you are editing a song.
When you use the app, third-party tools built into the app collect the following categories of information from your phone:
- Device and app information: Basic details such as your phone model, Android system version, language, and app version.
- Identifiers: Resettable or random IDs, such as your Android advertising ID and random app installation IDs.
- Approximate location: Your general area (such as your country or region), estimated from your IP address (your internet address).
- How you use the app and interact with ads: Which screens you open, how often you use the app, which features you use, and whether you see or tap on ads.
- Crash information: Technical details about what the app was doing if it crashes.
- Your ad consent choices: Your saved preferences for ad privacy.
This information is used to:
- show ads (including personalised ads where allowed), measure how ads perform, and stop ad fraud
- remember your ad privacy choices
- understand app usage so we can improve the app
- find and fix crashes
Your music files, tags, music library, and the album and artist names used for cover searches are never sent to advertising partners or analytics and crash reporting providers.
We do not ask for your name or email address in the app. If you email us (for example, with Send feedback in Settings, which opens your email app), we receive your email address and what you write, and we use it only to reply and help.
Who receives this information?
Information from the app is handled by the following recipients:
- Advertising partners that show ads, measure how they perform, and stop ad fraud.
- Service providers that help us with analytics and crash reporting.
- MusicBrainz (MetaBrainz Foundation) and the Cover Art Archive (MetaBrainz and the Internet Archive), which receive the album title, artist name, IP address, and technical request details only when you search for album covers online.
Our advertising partners and service providers include Google. You can see the full list of advertising partners in the consent message inside the app, and learn more at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
From these advertising and analytics providers, we only receive aggregated summary reports that do not single you out, along with crash reports when the app stops working.
Connections from the app are encrypted in transit using HTTPS.
Why are we allowed to use this information?
Privacy laws require us to have a valid legal reason (called a "legal basis") for handling information:
- Showing ads (including personalised ads): Where required by law, we rely on your consent (your permission). Where consent is not required, we rely on our legitimate interest (a fair business reason) in paying for and running a free app.
- Usage reports and crash reports: We rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the app working properly and improving it.
- Running the features you ask for (editing tags, fixing encodings, and searching for covers): We do this to provide the service you asked for when you use the app.
- Answering emails: When you contact us, we rely on our legitimate interest in supporting users.
What choices do you have?
- Ad consent: You can change your ad privacy choice at any time inside the app under Settings > Privacy options (shown where consent is required).
- Advertising ID: You can reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone's settings (under Settings > Privacy > Ads, or Google > Ads). Without it, you will still see ads, but they will not be personalised.
- Online cover search: You do not have to use online cover search. Editing and fixing tags work without it.
- Music access: You can remove the app's access to music at any time in your Android settings.
- Stop all collection: You can uninstall the app at any time to stop all data collection and delete its settings.
How long is information kept and how can it be deleted?
Settings kept on your phone (such as your preferred old text encoding) are deleted when you clear the app's data or uninstall the app. If you email us, we keep your message for as long as needed to handle your request, and it can be deleted on request. Analytics data is kept for up to 14 months. Crash reports are kept for up to 90 days. Advertising partners keep data under their own privacy policies.
Because we do not use accounts or collect your name or email address in the app, we usually cannot tell which analytics or crash data came from your phone. However, if you want us to delete analytics or crash data linked to your device, please email us and we will help as far as we can identify it.
What are your privacy rights?
Depending on where you live (for example, under the European GDPR, the UK GDPR, or US state privacy laws), you may have the right to:
- ask for a copy of your personal data (access)
- fix mistakes in your data (correct)
- ask us to erase your data (delete)
- limit how we use your data (restrict processing)
- object to how we use your data
- take back your permission (withdraw consent)
- complain to your local data protection authority (privacy regulator)
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for any reason other than those explained in this policy. To use any of your rights, please contact us using the details below.
Is the app meant for children?
The app is not aimed at children under 13 (or the minimum legal age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
How will you know if this policy changes?
We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top of this page shows when the latest version took effect. If we make important changes, we will also mention them in the app's update notes (release notes).
